How to install USoft Developer
Install USoft Developer on a Windows machine so you can start building USoft applications. Use this guide both for a first-time install and for installing another version alongside an existing one.
This guide only covers running the installer. USoft Developer runs without a license, but you need a valid license to use it. Install USoft first, then see USoft license management overview to activate your license.
Prerequisites
- Required knowledge: basic Windows administration (running installers, browsing folders, stopping services).
- Your PC, network, and RDBMS are already configured — see Hardware and operating system requirements if you haven't done this yet.
USDSetup-x64.exe, downloaded from the USoft download site. Request access via USoft Support if you don't have it.- If a version of USoft is already installed on this machine, know the difference between patch names and dayversions — see Versioning of USoft Developer.
Step 1: Start the installer
Double-click USDSetup-x64.exe and wait for the Installation Wizard's welcome screen.
If a dayversion of USoft is already installed on this machine, the wizard first shows a list of maintenance options. You can choose to overwrite one of the listed versions — only versions with the same patch name but a different dayversion name are offered. The version you overwrite is uninstalled once the new one has finished installing.
Click Next to continue.
Step 2: Choose the installation and log folders
Specify the folder for the USoft Series products and the folder for the USoft Log folder (see Log files and temporary files for what goes there).
Click Next to accept the defaults, or Browse… to pick other folders.
If you want to run multiple patch or major versions side by side (e.g. 11.0.1A and 11.0.1K, or USoft 10 and 11) for test or diagnostic purposes, point this install at a folder that does not already contain a USoft installation.
Step 3: Choose the program group
Click Next to accept the default program group, or specify another one first.
If the target installation folder has files currently in use, close all other USoft-related applications and processes (Rules Services, Service Framework servers) before continuing.
Step 4: Install and finish
Click Install to start copying files. A status screen shows progress.
When installation completes, the final wizard screen appears and offers to launch the USoft Binder. Click Finish to close the wizard.
Result: USoft Developer is installed, including USAPI.DLL and the USAPI header and library files (under INCLUDE and LIB in the installation directory) for building your own DLLs — see Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) for how to use them.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The version you want to overwrite isn't listed as a maintenance option | Maintenance options only list installed versions with the same patch name but a different dayversion | Install to a new folder instead, or confirm the version's patch name in Versioning of USoft Developer |
| Setup fails or hangs while overwriting an existing install | A USoft-related process (Rules Service, Service Framework server) still has installed files open | Close those processes and re-run the installer |
| Licensing doesn't respond right after installing | The installer briefly stops the hasplm license service while installing or updating it; it restarts once installation finishes | Wait for installation to complete. If licensing still doesn't respond, see How to troubleshoot license problems |
| USoft tools won't run after a successful install | No license has been activated yet | Follow USoft license management overview |
